Basics in Psychophysical Psychotherapy - Psykofyysisen psykoterapian peruskoulutus

Body-Focused Therapy is an expanded form of cognitive behavioral therapy. A wide repertoire of techniques concerning the body is used. Patients are helped to change, in an interrelated manner, both patterns of thinking and patterns of how they sense and organize their bodies. Related techniques for mindfulness and for mentalization capacities also play a role. The method can be done with both adults and children.

Body-Focused Therapy can be practiced in both short-term and long-term forms. The Basic Program is designed to give participants a thorough knowledge of the short-term form and a beginning acquaintance with the long-term form. No previous background in cognitive behavioral therapy is needed for learning BFT. Therapists from other traditions, such as psychodynamic, gestalt, or family therapy, will find the techniques and concepts easy to integrate into their accustomed approaches.

1. The Integration of Body Techniques with Verbal Therapy

In this seminar a first series of body techniques will be demonstrated and practiced. The emphasis will be on the use of body techniques to facilitate and deepen the verbal exchange. How a session with body techniques can best be structured will be explained. A basic theoretical perspective will be covered.

2. Body Techniques and Interaction

BFT is strongly oriented towards helping patients with their important relationships: i.e., with a partner, a child, other family members, friends, or work colleagues. When the patient is a child or adolescent this will include relationships with peers as well as family. Explained in the seminar will be how, in an individual

therapy context, the therapist can work in depth in this area. Implications for understanding and exploring the patient-therapist relationship will be covered too. A series of additional techniques will be taught.

3. Literature seminar

4. Body Techniques for Emotion Regulation

Body techniques can be extremely useful for aiding patients with how they regulate emotion. This includes both negative emotions, such as sadness, fear, anger, envy, shame, and guilt, as well as positive emotions, such as joy, pleasure, compassion, and wonder. Patients learn new skills for regulating negative emotions "down" and positive emotions "up." Included in the seminar will be the use of body-focused regulation techniques for severe symptoms such as self-harm, suicidal urges, excessive rage, drug and alcohol cravings, and panic attacks. Both self-regulation and interpersonal co-regulation will be covered.

5. Body Techniques for Work with Trauma

Body techniques allow a special form of help for patients who have a history of severe trauma. They can be used to aid with better management of flashbacks, nightmares, states of numbness, and trauma-related self-destructive behaviors. They can be used for the emotional processing of the trauma memories. They can be used also to help the patient develop new alternatives for action in relationships, i.e., alternatives which can replace trauma-based defensive modes. A series of techniques especially helpful for these goals will be taught.

The seminars are based on experientally learning. Students will train various body techniques in dyads and groups. Training in small groups provides experiences as the roles of the patient, therapist and observer. Along with training the seminars include theory learning, conversations and live demonstration of tehniques. In addition to seminars students will share and reflect there experiences in small groups between the seminars, write a summary of literature (1-2 pages) and a written assignment (6 – 10 pages).
